    Hint of the Month

    Spring 2018

Remember When? A few matters came to mind recently that brought to mind: Sometimes, we have forgotten..... For discussion:
    • "Traditional Quilts" I love the direction that "modern" quilt-makers have taken -- but, is it possible that in going down the current path we should/could be, also, considering some: "Back to the Future" matters? (I put the term "traditional quilts" in quotes, to give the topic a wide view; ala Reproduction quilts/block-types/fabric/etc.).

Yes, we have had some excellent classes/events this past year that can remind us of what we may be missing in this "modern"/"art" age.

However, I see that most "mass eMails" coming my way (often unsolicited, but that is another topic!), popular books, BLOG discussions and so on - seem to be less-and-less tradition-oriented. I have no problem with this -- yet: I also enjoy/appreciate having access to traditional-style pieces.

I am lucky, just now, to see on a "Design Wall" a very traditional piece coming forth: Uncomplicated, very comforting to look at -- and, it will look great on some bed soon: Kind of a "Perfect for Grandma's Visit" quilt, I am sure.

The fabric: Garden Delights - In The Beginning
The start of a Design Wall project:

What do you think about "back to the future" matters?
Any comments or otherwise, please: send mail to: Hintofthemonth at Bernina World of Sewing dot com
send mail to: HintoftheMonth at Bernina World of Sewing dot com

    • Designing / Creating for a Specific Size.

When was the last time you considered making a wall-hanging piece rather than "King/Queen/Full/Twin"-sized? Yes, of course, depending upon your wall at "your place", you may not have any concern about hanging your piece for a few months. However, why not take the time to know the showing-size of areas in your place that your piece could be for awhile? Often, a piece that you have created would be a fun/worthwhile discussion as friends/house guests join you for an evening.

Consider, sometimes: The size of "your wall" display area as you create your piece.

    • Hand Sewing.

When was the last time you enjoyed some hand-sewing/quilting? Is it possible, in this "speed"-oriented current time that we are missing something of real-value? I assume that many of you participate in bees or other activities that fill any missing void in this regard. The Millefiori Gathering had an introductory session recently and it was great to see such a pleasant/relaxed group.

      We have a wait/interest-list for 2018 Gatherings.

A Few Comments From Sonja of Bernina World of Sewing
After First Use of BERNINA 7 Series

The first time I saw the 780 I fell in love with the machine! I have not found one thing, so far, that "concerns" / bothers me.

The new design is elegant while also having a touch of "streamlining".

So far, I have had a chance to work/"play" with the 780 and the 710.

    • The stitch selection on both is a straight-forward matter. The touch screen on both machines makes it easy to become familiar with the stitch folders.

    • On the 710 I tried some of the new quilting stitches. I was impressed how the multi-directional stitch's sewing line was easily maintained.- even with the 9mm stitch blade. I definitely want to use some of the stitches with a wing needle; especially, stitch 1352 seems to have potential.

    • For the 780, if I have multiple embroidery designs in the screen / hoop, I can see the order that I have inserted the different designs (by way of "table tabs" - via the Retrieve Function Icon support of the 780). I was working with a customer the other day and with less than five minute's experience on the machine she had a very beautiful multi-design finished piece ready to go! It was very impressive to the customer and to me.

A Few Comments From Sonja of Bernina World of Sewing
After First Use of BERNINA 5 Series

    • The control panel is “next generation” and takes some getting used to. It you are a “text-er” and part of the networking generation it will come easily!
    • Embroidery on the 580 is touch-screen; to me, it is kind of like a “baby 830” operating-wise.
    • Many embroidery patterns are already loaded onto the 580.
    • I leapt right in to using one of these patterns. Multiplied, Mirror Image and Reduce 50%. All were easy to do and stitched out perfectly!

If you have time, we would love to show you the BERNINA 5 Series!

    BERNINA 3 Series

Stop By And Give Us A Look - and SEW using it.

Some Comments From Bernina Staff - After Working With the 3 Series for a Few Months

The next time that you visit our store, we would like to invite you to get to know the 3 Series machine if you have not already done so.

The machine is truly inspiring and invites us to create.

BERNINA took the time to put together a reasonable-priced sewing machine with some extra – and, valuable – features

We can highly recommend that you take the time to sew some with the 3 Series machines.

As we had mentioned in our previous post:

    • The physical design of the 3 Series is very attractive; classy and contemporary.
    • Bright screen; easy reading!
    • Background is black and the writing is white. Very comfortable to read.
    • Start and Stop button, with Speed Control
    • Needle Up and Down
    • Separate motor for bobbin-winding.
    • One-step buttonhole.
    • Handle (at the top of the machine) has an opening for the Stitch Card. Nice!
    • The new tray is very easily attached. Nice glide!
    • All 3 Series machines have 30 memory slots.

Most of all, the 3 Series machines have a beautiful stitch and they sew quietly and the sewing is “smooth”.

The 3 Series comes with clip-on feet that are very easily exchangeable. In addition, the specialty feet that BERNINA makes may be used on this machine. This is a big advantage for those sewers who invest in specific feet for special tasks; for example: Feet for piping, rufflers, or quilting feet.

Don’t hesitate to ask any of us at the store to show you the 3 Series!

Fabrics are added to this Sale area regularly. We aim at keeping the number of fabrics in this area at a sufficient level to make room for new fabric that is currently arriving and on the way! Bernina World of Sewing - Gatherings 2019

    2019 Gatherings

The 2019 Gatherings are taking place monthly in 2019:
    • Evening Gathering: The second Monday of each month, 5:00-9:00pm.
    • Daytime Gathering: The third Tuesday of each month, 10:00am-4:00pm.

The  Daytime Gathering participant will select quilts from the book: “Extraordinary Log Cabin Quilts” by Judy Martin (2013) Crosley-Griffith Publishing Company, Inc. and the Evening participant will choose quilt patterns selected from: "modern neutrals, A fresh look at Neutral Quilt Patterns" by Amy Ellis.

    Daytime Gathering:
    • Quilt Patterns Selected from the book:
"Extraordinary Log Cabin Quilts" by Judy Martin
    Evening Gathering:
    • Quilt Patterns Selected from the book:
"modern neutrals, A fresh look at Neutral Quilt Patterns" By Amy Ellis

We look forward to seeing all your beautiful work.

Note: You MUST be pre-registered to participate in the monthly Gatherings. Just "Show-Ups" the day/evening of the Gathering will not be allowed - we simply do not have room for such in the classroom. Sorry!

Those who signed up and are participating in the Gatherings have been contacted via eMail. For those participating and have been contacted, the next session for the 2019 Morning Gathering is: Tuesday, March 19 10:00am at the store and the next session of the 2019 Evening Gathering is: Monday March 11 5:00pm at the store. Again: Please do NOT show up for the Gathering if you have not been contacted (there, simply, is not sufficient space for "walk-in" participants). Sorry!

If you wish to be placed on the Wait List for either of the Gatherings - or, to be notified if an opening comes about for either the Daytime or Evening 2019 Gatherings, please send mail to: gatherings2019 at Bernina World of Sewing dot com

Or, of Course: Stop by the store. Sonja will have the latest information.

    Reminders:
    • The Gathering participants purchased, from our store, the book chosen to be part of this Gathering and the fabric needed for this quilt..

    • For the 2019 Gatherings, a yearly fee of $50 is charged when the attendee commits to the first Gathering he/she attends.

    • Gathering participants should have experience in sewing and in making quilts.

    • Gathering participants, surely, interact. However, the Gathering is not a class . Each participant is expected to be able to manage his/her own project.

    • The store will not be able to arrange and set-up class machines for use during the Gatherings. Gathering participants should bring to the Gathering what they need for sewing/cutting during the Gathering.

    • Due to the numerous options / aims / of each Gathering participant, space at the Gathering is limited.
Gathering Participants must be pre-signed up. "Drop in" participants, due to classroom class size and machine space limitations will not be accommodated. Sorry!

    • If a Gathering participant decides to "drop out" of the 2018 Gatherings, it would be appreciated if that were known by the store; there may a wait-list and, if a Gathering slot opens - Persons on the wait-list will be notified of such.

    2019 Gatherings

The  Daytime Gathering participant will select quilts from the book: “Extraordinary Log Cabin Quilts” by Judy Martin (2013) Crosley-Griffith Publishing Company, Inc. and the Evening participant will choose quilt patterns selected from: "modern neutrals, A fresh look at Neutral Quilt Patterns" by Amy Ellis.

    February, 2019

We had busy sessions with lots of project fabrics cut and neatly sorted into plastic bags! Of course (for the evening Gathering), the new Jason Yenter quilt (a contribution to the evening's work efforts) on the design wall was a star of the evening. The Daytime's session had a small-number of participants this month: Yet, getting started with the 2019 LC projects while also doing some extra-project-work: A full day!

In 2018, we had two Gatherings:

The Daytime participant chose, over the year, from two projects: "Antelope Canyon" from Laurie Shifrin Designs or a Web-downloaded-by-the-participant pattern: "Sea Swept by Laura Flynn", and the Evening participant chose quilt patterns selected from: "modern neutrals, A fresh look at Neutral Quilt Patterns" by Amy Ellis. (Note: Evening Gatherers decided that they could also choose from the Daytime projects).

In 2011, we had two full-year "Gatherings".

Each of the Gathering's quilts were selected with two objectives firmly in mind:
    1) Beautiful pieces and
    2) Quilts that you might view as "once in a lifetime" happenings; Not necessarily quilts you would make on a regular basis.
